What is Motion Design?

Hey, it’s Bubba from Haunted Basement. I wanted to share our updated motion design reel with you. It’s a smattering of some of our favorite logo, text, and character animations we’ve made over the years.

Maybe you’re curious to learn what the difference between motion design and motion graphics is? Well, motion design refers to the discipline of applying graphic design principles to filmmaking and video production through the use of animation and visual effects to convey a story or evoke emotion. Motion graphics are what’s created in that process.

So, simply put: motion design is a discipline, and motion graphics are the product of that discipline.

It's a similar relationship to the one between filmmaking and films. To make a film, you need a filmmaker – someone with a deep understanding of filmmaking principles and techniques. The same goes for making motion graphics – you need a motion designer with a deep understanding of core animation principles, video production, graphic design, animation software, etc.

When you use an online template to whip up motion graphics for your brand, you miss a huge opportunity to work with a creative who can get down and dirty with keyframes and pixels to unleash your brand’s design potential. Sure, templates can be handy resources at times, but custom motion design is what will really set your brand apart in today’s noisy, oversaturated digital world.
