It’s Always Sunny In The Haunted Basement

Reading Time: 2 mins

As someone involved in a creative company, I am constantly searching for things that inspire me and fuel our work. As noted in Haunted Basement’s second podcast, that’s part of the reason I loved Everything Everywhere All At Once so much. It felt different in an age of sameness - it was quirky and weird and incredibly fun. I realize it’s not for everyone and I know my latest and all consuming obsession, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, also may not be for everyone either. However, stick with me and I’ll explain why you should care about Sunny and its connection to Haunted Basement.

I feel an almost personal connection to this show even though I don’t really care for the city of Philadelphia (I’m a lifelong Boston sports fan) and I’ve never met anyone associated with the show (although Charlie did go to college right down the street from me–shout out  Merrimack College). It never fails to make me cringe and / or laugh… sometimes more cringe than laugh but those cringe-inducing episodes are usually the more memorable ones. The characters are horrible human beings but their entitlement is often eye opening and results in interesting takes on current events. Outside of the insane story lines, I love watching the cast act and engage with one another, and I believe it’s because it is clear that this cast and crew are doing what they love and they really really enjoy creating with each other.

Watching Sunny reminds me of watching A.J. and Bubba as kids deciding to make a movie and then doing it without too much thought put into it. It was pure joy to watch them work together (or with them, if I was lucky enough to get tapped to star or help out in any way), and it was always so fun to watch their finished product. Now that we are older and we’ve formed Haunted Basement Video Productions, I almost feel like we are Rob McElhenney, Charlie Day and Glenn Howerton (RCG Productions LLC) just starting Sunny. Again, not knowing any of the guys personally, I feel like they were likely trying to make each other laugh and also trying to make a product they would want to consume. And after working alongside A.J. and Bubba I can absolutely assure you that is what we have set out to do with Haunted Basement. We are working hard every day to make an amazing product and also have a bit of fun along the way.

For anyone who does watch Sunny, I hope you understand what I am saying by writing this post. For anyone who does not, since it’s on Season 15 (and is the longest running live action sitcom in American history), you probably won’t start watching now. There is likely a reason you have not yet watched it. Why don’t you just listen to our latest podcast instead.
