3 Things We’re Diggin’

Thanks to our podcast you may already know our thoughts on movies such as The Godfather, The Muppets Christmas Carol and A Goofy Movie, and now we present even more of our thoughts on even more media. Welcome to the first entry of a weekly blog series that we are calling 3 Things We’re Diggin’.

In this series, we’ll each share some form of media that we’ve consumed and enjoyed this week. Film may be our passion, but music and the written word also hold a special place in all of our hearts.

You may passionately agree, you may vehemently disagree - feel free to let us know in the comments!

3 Things We’re Diggin’ The Week of March 27, 2023

  • [Ashleigh] Dolly Alderton - I think I’m late to the Dolly game, but I am just smitten with her. I feel like I am discovering a new crush, someone who reminds me of an old crush (Nora Ephron - and I don’t say that lightly). Reading Dolly’s memoir, Everything I Know About Love, brings me right back to the “good ol days” and makes me really miss the days where my friends and I were a little crazy, but mostly because we enjoyed making each other laugh and telling stories, hungover, the next morning. I’ve discovered she had a podcast - The High Low - which I’ve listened to one episode of and found the range of conversations both entertaining, informative and thought provoking – the episode I listened to was called “”Are Your Bookshelves A Reflection of Your Character - Or Your Curiosity?” which really made me take a closer look at my bookselves. All I have to say is, Hello Dolly! And I’m glad I found you!

  • [A.J.] I went to the AMC Kips Bay last Friday to watch Zach Braff’s new movie A Good Person. Back in 2015 I worked for Zach as his assistant on a few projects, including his 2017 caper film Going In Style, so I always enjoy checking in on what he’s been up to. A Good Person is a return to the style he created in his directorial debut Garden State. It’s a melancholy character study starring Florence Pugh as a young woman whose life is derailed by a car accident and the accidental death of her future sister-in-law. She becomes addicted to opioids to numb the pain of the tragedy. The film is about her working through that grief and trying to find a way out of her opioid spiral. And similar to Garden State, the soundtrack is quite good. I have been listening to A Love Song Seven Ways by Benjamin Lazar Davis on repeat since I heard it in the film. God, I love a woozy song. And listen to those drum hits that lead to the chorus. It’s the musical equivalent of taking the final steps up a staircase that leads you to a beautiful view.

  • [Bubba] I’ve had two albums on repeat for the past few weeks: Serengeti’s AJAI II and KDXMPC. Both feature the smooth, jazzy beats of producers Child Actor and Kenny Segal respectively, as well as Geti’s signature flow. There’s an effortless quality to these albums which simply boggles my brain: According to Spotify, Serengeti has released 6 full-length LPs and something close to 50 (!) singles and EPs in the past 3 years alone. His full discography? Well, if you can track down all his collabs, features, and releases under alter-egos, let me know. The man is beyond prolific. Anyway, what I really love about AJAI II and KDXMPC is that you can enjoy them at face value as great hip hop albums…or, you can enjoy them as the latest entries in the saga of Kenny Dennis and Ajai, two characters that Serengti has been rapping about, and rapping as, for over a decade and as many albums. So this isn’t just music – it’s another building block in a universe that includes side projects, screenplays, graphic novels, as well as a failed television pilot, all orchestrated and originated from the inventive, insatiable mind of Serengeti. Tired of Marvel? Give the Serengeti-verse a try.
